Ruby Project Greenland: DMS Plant

The ruby project is located in Fiskenaesset, Greenland for Leonhard Nilsen & Sønner AS (LNS) – formally True North Gems – and involved the turnkey supply of a modular DMS Plant for the recovery of rubies at the Aappaluttoq project.

The client approached Halyard for a DMS processing solution within a limited budget. Consequently, a used plant was located, procured and completely refurbished to as-new condition before being exported to Greenland.

Halyard also designed and supplied various other materials handling components for the project as part of the supply package.

The Challenge

The client had a very tight budget and required a reliable plant to be shipped to site within a short timeframe.

The requirement was for a modular plant to be supplied that could easily be incorporated to the balance of the process plant.

Due to the fact that the plant was to be shipped to a remote site, it required modularization so that it could easily fit into a standard shipping container.

Halyard Scope

Halyard were responsible for sourcing the plant and refurbishing it. An additional requirement was to change the process whereby the plant could run at a very high density in order to recover the Ruby (Corundum) which themselves have a very high
Specific Gravity (SG) of 3.97 – 4.08. In order to achieve this an additional densification circuit had to be designed and installed.

When Halyard was engaged, the first objective was to source a good used plant and assure that it could be successfully utilized for this application. Subsequently, when a plant was secured, Halyard were able to confirm a fixed price for the contract and undertake this as a turnkey project.

The plant was successfully refurbished, packaged into containers and shipped to site where it landed at Nuuk before being barged to Fiskenaesset.

Halyard provided assistance to LNS for the plant construction, commissioning and operator training.

The result of the project is that Halyard was able to work with the project team during a very difficulty financial transition period and successfully complete the project.
The plant started and operated as expected which has led to LNS recovering rubies from the deposit as expected.
